Why the Church? Part #1

Posted: January 31, 2013 in Pastor Posts

God created with a purpose. Genesis 1 describes each aspect of creation, as well as its purpose. Each animal was created unique and special, “according to its kind” (Genesis 1:11-12, 21, 24-25, ESV).  We see in Ecclesiastes that, “For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, ESV). The same is true for the Church. The Church exists for a reason. This period in history is a specific time designated for the church to be the tool through which God works in this world. The Church has a purpose to fulfill, a role to play, and a mission to accomplish. Local churches must apply each of these to their specific context. It is the responsibility of the pastors and elders of each local body to apply the universal purposes of the greater Church to the local church body God has given them.

Many churches today do not know their purpose, their role, or their mission because their pastors do not. Many people are not interested in the least in the church because the church has become so backward to what it was created to be. GCC has been blessed over the last 12 years to have a pastor with a “kingdom sized” vision for GCC. As we look to the future, I would like to answer the questions: “Who are we? Where are we going? and Why?” In order to answer these questions we must go back to Scripture and find out what God says about His Church. That’s right. The church is God’s. He created it, grew it, sustained it, and oh yeah…died for it. As such, He might just have something valuable to say in answer to these questions. In the next few blog posts, I will discuss why the church exists, the role of the pastors/elders, and how we are to go about fulfilling the mission that Jesus Himself gave to the Church before His ascension. For each theme, I will look at the universal principles and then apply them to our context as a local church. Get ready! Buckle up! Because your mission, should you choose to accept it, may just cost you something!
